First-Century Time Capsules

Activity Objective:
The young people will reflect on significant items from the time and place of Jesus' earthly life.
Lesson Outcome:
The young people should be able to describe the world of Jesus.
Materials
  • Paper, pencils
Directions:
  • Engage the young people in a discussion of what life was like in Palestine during the time of Jesus. Include religious, political, and social aspects of life.
  • Divide the young people into groups of three or four, and instruct them to brainstorm a list of significant items from this time period.
  • Have the young people decide on six to eight items that they would place in a time capsule, and have them write these items on a sheet of paper.
  • Instruct each group to share their lists with the entire group and to tell why they think the items they chose are significant. Have them explain what someone who found the time capsule could learn about Jesus.

A general Internet search will provide many examples about life during Jesus' time.
