Adam and Eve

Activity Objective:

To learn the story of Adam and Eve to give context to the discussion of temptation

Lesson Outcome:

The children will understand what it means to be in a situation of temptation.

Materials

Five copies of the skit found below

Directions:

Have one child read aloud the definition of temptation: "an attraction, from outside us or from iside us, that can lead us to not follow God's commands."
Tell the children that they will be putting on a skit about Adam and Eve and their temptation.
Choose five children to play the different roles: Narrator, God, Adam, Eve, Serpent.
Have the children read their parts while you and the other children listen.
When the skit is over, remind the children that God did not give up on Adam and Eve. He promised to send a savior, Jesus, who would bring salvation, the forgiveness of sins and the restoration of friendship with God.

Skit

NARRATOR:	We are now in the Garden of Eden and I will introduce you to who is there. This is God, who created this beautiful garden and everything in it.
GOD:	Hello everyone. You are really going to enjoy this story about making good choices.
NARRATOR:	And this is Adam and Eve. They were created by God, too.
ADAM:	Hello. This garden is the most wonderful place to live.
EVE:	Hi, there. I love living here, too. It's great.
NARRATOR:	Now let's get started.
THE SERPENT:	Hey, what about me?
NARRATOR:	Oh, I almost forgot. The serpent. God created him, too.
THE SERPENT:	I'm really the most interesting character in this story.
NARRATOR:	You think you are. Well, we will see. Let's begin.

GOD:	Adam and Eve, take care of this beautiful garden.
ADAM:	We will, God. We love living here.
GOD:	You may eat the fruits of every tree in this garden, but you may not eat the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden.
EVE:	What will happen?
GOD:	If you eat of that tree or even touch it, you will die.

NARRATOR:	Now one day, the Serpent saw Eve alone. He really was a troublemaker.
SERPENT:	Eve, did God really say you were not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?
EVE:	God said we may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden, but not the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden.
SERPENT:	Why not?
EVE:	Because if we eat the fruit or even touch it, we will die.
SERPENT:	No! You will not die! God knows that on the day you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods. You will know good from evil.
(The Serpent goes away just as Adam comes back.)
ADAM:	Eve, who were you talking to?
EVE:	Just a funny serpent.
NARRATOR:	Eve sees the tree in the middle of the garden and picks some fruit.
EVE:	Adam, this fruit looks so good to eat. (She takes a bite of the fruit.) It is good. Try some, Adam.
ADAM:	(He takes a bite.) It is good.
NARRATOR:	I think I hear God coming.
(Adam and Eve hide behind a tree.)
GOD:	(Loudly walks in.) WHERE ARE YOU?
ADAM:	God, I heard a sound in the garden, and I was afraid and I hid.
GOD:	Have you been eating fruit of the tree I forbade you to eat?
ADAM:	Eve gave me this fruit and I ate it.
GOD:	What is this you have done?
EVE:	The serpent tempted me and I ate the fruit.
GOD:	You have disobeyed me. You must leave the Garden of Eden and never return.
NARRATOR:	Because Adam and Eve made a bad choice and gave in to temptation, they had to leave the beautiful garden that they loved.
