Christmas Activity

Activity Objective:

To identify the meaning of Jesus' birth

Lesson Outcome:

The children will be able to reflect upon the meaning of Jesus' birth in their lives and demonstrate themselves as messengers of the Good News.

Materials

Directions:

Ask the children to recall what the angels said to the shepherds upon the announcement of Jesus' birth. (Glory to God in the highest.)
Read aloud to the children the passage from Luke 2:1-20. Allow the children to close their eyes or rest their heads as they listen to the story.
Then invite the children to imagine what it was like when the angels appeared to the shepherds.
As they do this, give the children colored paper, felt cloth, and stencils of an angel. You may also choose to stencil angels on the paper first, and then ask the children to cut them out.
The children will cut out angels from one sheet of colored paper and one sheet of felt cloth. The two shapes will then be glued together.
Invite the children to write Glory be to God in the highest on the paper side of the angel. Have this written on the board for them to copy.
On the felt side, encourage the children to decorate their angels.
Punch a hole in the top of each angel once they've been decorated, and give each child a piece of ribbon to string through the hole.
Invite the children to share their angels at home by hanging them on their Christmas trees. Encourage the children to share the message of Good News with family members and friends during this time of celebration.

To save time, you might want to have the angels cut out before the activity.

Sensitivities:

Some children may have a difficult time tracing with a stencil on felt cloth and cutting the cloth as well.
