History of Parish

Activity Objective:
The young people will deepen their appreciation of how their parish meets the needs of Catholics of the past, present, and future
Lesson Outcome:
The young people should be able explain how Baptism calls us to participate in the common priesthood of the faithful.
Materials
  • Materials with vary
Directions:
  • Direct the young people to research the history of their parish.
  • Encourage them to interview the parish priest or staff, as well as older parishioners or family members who have belonged to the parish for many years.
  • Their questions might include the following:

When, how, and why was the parish founded?
How did it get its name?
Who were the first parishioners?
What style of architecture was used?
What changes have taken place in the church building, the membership of the parish community, or the activities of the parish?
What are the present goals of the parish?
How does the parish leadership plan to meet the needs of current and new members?

  • Have the young people compile their research and share it creatively through bulletin-board displays, visual computerized presentations, church bulletins, or audio programs.

Approximate Time:
10-15 minutes
Hints:
Inform the parish staff of the project in advance. If there is written material about the parish, request that it be made available to the young people.

Arrange a convenient time for the young people to contact the parish staff so that interview times can be set up.
