Baptism Dramatization

Activity Objective:
To act out what happens at Baptism
Lesson Outcome:
The children will understand that we become part of God's family at Baptism
Materials
•Doll with white outfit
•Candle
•Bowl with water
•Baby oil
•Bible
Directions:
  • Tell the children that they are going to act out a Baptism.
  • Select children to act as the parents, godparents, priest, brothers and sisters, and other relatives.
  • Have the children who are pretending to be the parents hold the baby doll.
  • Have the other children stand around a desk with the bowl and other supplies on it.
  • Have the child who is pretending to be the priest stand in front of all the people.
  • Narrate to the children what comes next in the dramatization.
Learning Styles:
Body Smart,People Smart
Approximate Time:
10-15 minutes
Hints:
You may be able to get an actual baptismal candle, white vestment, and blank baptismal certificate from your parish rectory. If you have not been to a Baptism in a while, your Catechetical Leader can provide you with a copy of the Rite of Baptism to follow.
Sensitivities:
Emphasize that this is not a real Baptism, but a dramatization so the children can participate in the ritual and have it explained.

If there are children in your group with special needs (physical, visual, hearing, language, or behavioral disabilities), adapt the activity accordingly.
