Adults and children will make and decorate bookmarks that list the Gospels of Lent. Refer to the current liturgical year to determine which bookmarks to print. (Example: 2008 = Year A) These bookmarks can be used in family Bibles during this Lenten season.
.
There are two downloadable resources needed for this activity. First, there is a family handout that discusses the importance of Scripture. The remaining downloads are sets of four identical Bible bookmarks for Gospel Years A, B, and C.
For this activity center, set up a work table with the following materials:
- Printed handouts, one for each family
- Bookmarks printed on heavy card stock, one for each family
- Crayons or markers
- Scissors, one pair for every six families
- Hole punch, one for every ten families
- 12-inch pieces of yarn or pre-made tassels
Note: You might consider offering Bibles for sale at this event.
Tips for Gathering Materials
Preparing the Templates: For best results, print the bookmark template onto heavyweight card stock. Check your local office supply store for 100 lb card stock (264 g/m) or heavier. Card stock is available in a variety of weights and colors at most office supply stores. You may wish to pre-cut the bookmarks if you want to save time during the event or if you have any concerns about the participants' ability to cut heavy paper by hand.
Yarn: If you use yarn, be sure to have plenty of pieces available in many different colors. The yarn can be tied in loops, bows, or in any other style the participant chooses.
Pre-made Tassels: You may wish to provide pre-made tassels instead of yarn. Pre-made bookmark tassels are available in bulk at many crafts stores. You can make your own or find them on the Internet by typing “premade bookmark tassels” into a search engine.
