Breaking Bread Together

Activity Objective:
To let the children experience breaking bread together
Lesson Outcome:
The children will feel the crumbs and the texture of bread as they break off pieces of the loaf.
Materials
  • An uncut loaf of bread
Directions:
  • Invite the children to sit in a circle.
  • Tell the children that Jesus broke bread with his disciples at the Last Supper and on the road to Emmaus.
  • Instruct the children to pass the loaf of bread in a basket, breaking off a chunk to eat.
  • Encourage the children to reflect about how the bread felt. Was it easy to break off? Was it messy?
  • Discuss why Jesus chose bread (staff of life—universal food under many forms)
  • Discuss why we no longer break bread at Mass. (too many people, messy, health reasons, crumbs—each particle is to be treated with reverence)
Learning Styles:
Body Smart,People Smart
Approximate Time:
5 minutes
Hints:
Be aware of any children with food allergies.

If there is a child with a visible health problem (cold, runny nose), make sure that that child is the last one to break bread when the basket is passed.

Make sure there is enough bread to go around.
