Celebrate Your Baptism

Activity Objective:
To help the children recognize the importance of their Baptism
Lesson Outcome:
The children will decorate a white candle as a way to recall their Baptism and use this candle with their family to celebrate their baptismal day.
Materials
  • Inexpensive white candles (taper style), one per child
  • Permanent marker (several different colors)
  • Small pieces of ribbon, sequins, or other simple decorations
  • Glue
  • Copy of the baptismal promises
Directions:
  • Remind the children that as part of the ritual for celebrating the Sacrament of Baptism, the parents are given a lighted candle as a symbol of the light of Christ they received in Baptism.
  • Brainstorm some of the symbols that are used to represent the key elements of Baptism. (water, signs of the Trinity, oil, the cross)
  • Distribute the candles to the children and explain that they are to use the markers and other items to decorate their candles with symbols that will help them recall the meaning of their Baptism. Circulate among the children to offer any assistance that is needed.
  • Once the candles are completed, invite the children to gather together and show the group their candles.
  • At the end of the session, encourage the children to take their candles home and use them with their families (during dinner or family prayer time) on their baptismal day, which is the anniversary of their Baptism.
Learning Styles:
Art/Space Smart
Approximate Time:
10-15 minutes
Hints:
Prior to this activity, help the children estimate the date of their Baptism in order to celebrate its anniversary.

Only permanent markers will work on wax candles; washable ones will easily rub off.

Other decorations can also be attached using small straight pins.
Sensitivities:
If there are children in your group with special needs (physical, visual, hearing, language, or behavioral disabilities), adapt the activity accordingly.
