Collection Jars

Activity Objective:
To create collection jars for spare change
Lesson Outcome:
The children will understand that we can follow Jesus' instructions to feed the poor.
Materials
  • Old glass jars (baby food or jam), with tops
  • Lots of magazines
  • Scissors
  • Glue
Directions:
  • Explain to the children that God urges us to share and take care of the less fortunate. Remind them of the story of the loaves and fishes.
  • Divide the class into small groups of three or four.
  • Pass out magazines and scissors to every group. There should be one pair of scissors per child and an assortment of magazines per group.
  • •Instruct the children to cut out pictures of food or of people getting together over a meal.
  • Tell the children to glue the pictures to the jars, completely covering the glass. The pictures should overlap and create a collage design.
  • Ask the children to take the jars home and place any change from their pockets into the jars each day. At the end of the week (or other specified length of time) collect the jars and donate the money raised to a local food pantry.
  • Explain to the children that they are spreading the word of God in this way, and that they are following the Acts of Mercy instruction to feed the poor.
Learning Styles:
Art/Space Smart
Approximate Time:
10-15 minutes
Hints:
Have the children bring a jar from home.

Bring a few extra jars in case any children forget to bring theirs.

Encourage the children to keep the tops on the jars so they don't lose the money.
Sensitivities:
Do not compare how much the children bring in. This is not a contest but a way of encouraging the children to share.
