Do-Not-Be-Afraid Visuals

Activity Objective:
To explore the story of the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt
Lesson Outcome:
The children will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the meaning of the angel's words “Do not be afraid.”
Materials
  • Colored paper
  • Large poster paper
  • Crayons, markers, pens, and pencils
Directions:
  • Invite the children to recall what they know about the Holy Family's flight to Egypt.
  • Then say to the children: The Holy Family had to flee for their lives, but they were not afraid because God's angel told them that they would be safe.
  • Ask the children to think of a time when they were afraid and then to draw a picture of the event, including an angel telling them “Do not be afraid.”
  • Provide the children with colored paper and other coloring materials that they might want to use for their visual representations.
  • Once the children have finished, invite them to share their visual representations with the rest of the children.
  • If possible, display their visuals somewhere in the room. Otherwise, encourage the children to share their artwork with family members at home.

Hints:
Some children may depict scenes of a sensitive nature. Be prepared to handle these situations with care.
