Easter Celebration

Activity Objective:
To recognize Easter as a day of celebration
Lesson Outcome:
The children will be able to identify Easter as the day of Jesus' Resurrection.
Materials
  • Poster board
  • Party decorations and favors
  • Coloring materials
Directions:
  • Begin by inviting the children to discuss happy times or events that they have had with family and friends. Encourage them to express how they felt at each of these celebrations.
  • Then say: Easter is a happy time for all of us. We celebrate Jesus' rising from the dead. His Resurrection fills us with great joy!
  • Invite the children to plan an Easter celebration.
  • Gather the children into small groups and assign each group a specific role. Assign one group to be in charge of decorations, another to plan games or entertainment, another to focus on appropriate snacks, and so on.
  • Help the children plan by offering suggestions as they work.
  • After the groups have had time to plan, ask the children to work on their own and create invitations to the party.
  • Invite each child to create an invitation for a family member. Write on the board for the children to copy, Come to my Easter celebration (day/time).
  • As they work, remind the children that we call Sunday the Lord's Day because of Jesus' Resurrection.
  • Instruct the children to bring their invitations home to give to the family members they are inviting.

Hints:
Offer to bring the food and drink for the party so that the children aren't responsible for bringing everything.

Remind the children to focus on the meaning of Easter as they create the decorations and invitations.

Be sure to check with your catechetical leader before planning the party.
Sensitivities:
Be aware of specific food allergies and make arrangements for those with special eating needs.
