Easter Egg Customs

© Photodisc/Easter eggs

The egg is an Easter symbol because it is a sign of new life. There are many Easter customs throughout the world involving eggs, some dating back thousands of years. In Germany, people were not supposed to eat eggs during Lent, so eggs were served on Easter to symbolize the end of the Lenten fast. In the United States, the traditional Easter egg roll may have its origin in imitating the stone being rolled away from Christ's tomb.
