Eucharistic Celebration Match

Activity Objective:
To help the children identify the days on which we are obliged to attend Mass and the reasons for these celebrations
Lesson Outcome:
The children will understand our obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation.
Materials
  • Index cards with game clues (one for each child)
Directions:
  • Tell the children that this activity will help them remember and understand why we celebrate the Eucharist on special days.
  • Prepare three cards for Sunday and three cards for each individual Holy Day. (Examples: Sunday, the day on which we remember the Resurrection, the Lord's Day; August 15, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mary is taken up into heaven.) Prepare as many duplicates as you need for each child to receive one card.
  • Give a card to each child. Invite the children to go on a silent search to find their matches. Tell them that there are three cards to describe Sunday or each Holy Day. Advise them if there are duplicates.
  • Give the children time to circulate, reading each other's cards until they group themselves with their matches.
  • Conclude by having members of the groups read their cards to make sure everyone is with his or her correct day.
  • Remind the children that these are special days we celebrate the Eucharist as a Church family.
