Five Facts

About the Sacraments of Healing

Activity Objective:
To distinguish between the Sacrament of Penance and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
Lesson Outcome:
The children will be able to compare the two Sacraments of Healing
Materials
  • 10 index cards, each with 1 of the 10 statements from below

1.The priest may never repear what the penitent has confessed.

2.The Act of Contrition is not used to express joy to praise God.

3.This sacrament is not only for those who are near death.  (Anointing of the Sick)

4.The absolution by the priest is an essential part of this sacrament.

5.Contrition means being sorry for your sins.

6.The Holy Communion offered to a dying person is called viaticum.

7.The priest anoints the sick person on the forehead and the hands.

8.Before confessing sins, the penitent makes an examination of conscience.

9.This sacrament doesn't need to be taken place in church. (Anointing of the Sick)

10.This sacrament may only be received once. (Anointing of the Sick)

Directions:
  • Randomly distribute to the children statements from above. (About half of the children will receive a statement about the Sacrament of Penance, and half will receive a statement about the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.)
  • Instruct the children to keep the statements to themselves.
  • Invite the children to read over the statements and decide which of the two Sacraments of Healing that the statements belong to.
  • Allow time for the children to understand the statements.
  • Explain that now that they know which sacrament their statement matches, they are to go and find the other children who have been given statements about the same sacrament that they have.
  • Explain further that the way the children are to find each other is to ask questions about the sacrament they are looking for.
  • Be clear that the point of the activity is to join all those of the same sacrament together without simply asking which sacrament a child has.
  • After the children have found each other, have the group share five facts about their sacrament.
  • Conclude by comparing the two sacraments.

Learning Styles:
People Smart
Approximate Time:
15 minutes
Hints:
Depending on the size of the group, it may be necessary to have more than one copy of the statements to accommodate everyone.
Sensitivities:
Find a buddy for a child who would have difficulty asking questions and locating others with the same sacrament.
