The word gethsemane comes from the Hebrew word for “oil press.” During the time of Jesus, the garden at Gethsemane was most likely a place where olive trees were grown to make olive oil. Gethsemane is mentioned in all four gospels, and Saint John says that Jesus went there often to pray. The garden may have had an industrial character because an oil press was located there and because olive oil was probably mass-produced there. Pilgrims in Jerusalem can still visit this site today to see the places where, according to tradition, Jesus prayed, the apostles waited and slept, and Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus with a kiss.
