Gospel Rocks

Activity Objective:
The young people will reflect on words of Scripture that have personal meaning for them.
Lesson Outcome:
The young people should be able to describe some of the various images that the New Testament teaches us about Jesus.
Materials
  • Bibles
  • Rocks, large and smooth enough to write on (1 per young person )
  • Colored markers (thin tips)
  • CD player, instrumental music CD
Directions:
  • Choose one of the Gospels and invite the young people to open their Bibles.
  • Explain that they are to look through the Gospel for a phrase or a passage that speaks to them.
  • When they have chosen one, invite them to write it on their rocks. They may also decorate their rocks.
  • Ask volunteers to share their rocks and to explain why they chose that phrase or passage.
  • Invite the young people to memorize their phrase or passage and to use it for personal prayer.

20 minutes
Hints:
Playing instrumental music while the young people work can create a prayerful atmosphere.

Rocks can be treated with a water-and-glue mixture or other high-gloss preservative.
