Holy Spirit Windsock

Activity Objective:
To help the children create a visual image of the Holy Spirit
Lesson Outcome:
The children will recognize symbols used for the Holy Spirit.
Materials
  • 9" by 12" construction paper (red)
  • White sheet of paper
  • 5" to 12" long strips of yellow crepe paper or wide ribbon
  • Tape, stapler
  • Hole punch
  • 1 small piece of yarn (2-4 inches) per child
Directions:
  • Direct the children to brainstorm symbols of the Holy Spirit. (dove, flames, and wind)
  • Ask the children to draw one of the symbols on a white sheet of paper.
  • Cut out the symbol and tape it to the center of the red construction paper.
  • Turn over the red paper and tape the yellow ribbon onto the edges of the red paper so that the ribbon sticks out from the red paper.
  • Fold the red sheet into a cylinder shape with the symbol on the outside and the yellow ribbon on the inside. Staple the cylinder shape on the overlap of the red paper to create a windsock.
  • Punch two holes near one end of the windsock and then tie the yarn ends through the holes so the windsock has a hanger.
Learning Styles:
Art/Space Smart
Approximate Time:
15 minutes
Hints:
Doves can be copied onto the white paper in advance to help the activity go faster.
Sensitivities:
Help the children staple their cylinders shut—it may take four hands to keep the paper together and staple it.
