In Housing Heaven’s Fire, author John Haughey, SJ, issues a call to holiness in our lives. Haughey offers sharp insights into the nature of holiness and shares his personal efforts to respond to the challenge of holiness. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of Scripture, theology, philosophy, and literature, Haughey projects a prismatic view of the many facets of holiness, and he examines holiness from the perspective of the Hebrew Sriptures, the Israelites and their call, Jesus, and St. Paul. Though a call to holiness may seem daunting—and holiness is something we should constantly be striving for—we come to realize through this book that holiness is also a gift we have already received.

John C. Haughey, S.J., has been a professor of Christian ethics at Loyola University Chicago’s graduate program since 1991. The former associate editor of America magazine, Haughey is the author of ten books, including Virtue and Affluence and Converting Nine to Five: A Spirituality of Daily Work. He entered the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus in 1948.
Haughey’s exploration of holiness is a compelling call to reclaim a dimension of Christian life and experience that has been neglected in recent days. His challenging reflections seek to reawaken and stimulate a desire for holiness understood as a gift, a gift rather than an achievement—a gift that makes us fully human and opens us to the world.

Housing Heaven's Fire is a thoughtfully written treatise on just what holiness is, the difference between being holy and simply being good, and the human and Christian aspiration to achieve holiness. Housing Heaven's Fire is highly recommended for students of religion and spirituality within a Christian theological framework as being an insightful and deeply meaningful viewpoint on giving oneself over to God and His great works.

Using the metaphor of fire to represent God's gift of holiness, Fr. Haughey offers insights into its nature and shares his own effort to respond to its challenge. He examines holiness first from the perspective of the Old Testament, then through the life and humanity of Jesus, the writings of Paul, our desires, solidarity, and human rights. He also explains the role of the Holy Spirit in this process.

John Haughey's metier is giving new life to moribund theological terms or those worn threadbare by overuse. The sweep of this book is impressive. This book is recommended to all serious readers who welcome a little enchantment in their lives. It will not disappoint.

But apropos of an Easter/ Pentecost celebration, John Haughey turns our attention to another important perspective- our received gift of holiness. Jesuit Fr. Haughey is a writer who always adjusts my spirirtual perception with a twist of his theological kaleidoscope. This short book is a worthy post-Lenten reflection, particularly noteworthy in its first three chapters.
