How I Grow With God

Activity Objective:
To demonstrate the ways to be more like Jesus during Lent
Lesson Outcome:
The children will complete an activity that helps them understand how Jesus brings us closer to God.
Materials
  • Bibles
  • Poster paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Colored paper
Directions:
  • Create a list with the children of the special things we can do during the Lenten season, such as praying more often, limiting TV viewing, giving up dessert, and so on.
  • Spend some time sharing the ways each child plans to be more like Jesus during Lent.
  • When you feel the children are ready, begin reading Psalm 1:1-3 from a Bible.
  • Direct the children to listen carefully as you read the passage aloud.
  • After the reading, invite the children to think of the people who help them flourish and grow closer to God.
  • Say to the children: We want to be like the healthy tree that grows close to the stream. We want to grow closer to God, and God wants us to be more like Jesus. We can be more like Jesus by doing good deeds. Let's draw pictures of ourselves doing good deeds that show how we plan to be more like Jesus this Lenten season.
  • Provide the children with colored paper and crayons and invite them to create illustrations of themselves doing good deeds for God.
  • Encourage the children to refer to the list of ways they plan to be more like Jesus as they draw.
  • Allow time for the children to share their projects with the group.
Learning Styles:
Art/Space Smart,People Smart,Self Smart,Word Smart
Approximate Time:
30 minutes
Hints:
Encourage the children to demonstrate their doing good deeds in a way they feel most comfortable by choosing to do either drawings, dramatizations, or promise cards.
