I Can Serve My Community

Activity Objective:
To encourage the children to serve others
Lesson Outcome:
The children will be aware of the needs of others and how they can help people in need.
Materials
  • Letter to families
  • Laundry basket
Directions:
Week One
  • Discuss with the group that there are families who do not have enough food every day.
  • Brainstorm with the children about what kinds of food would be good to share with a hungry family.
  • Ask the children to work at home to earn food for a hungry family.
  • Show the children your laundry basket and talk about filling it with food for a hungry family or for your local food pantry.
  • Send a letter home with the children describing the project; ask the families to have the children do chores to earn the food.

Week Two
  • Set the laundry basket out in reach of the children.
  • As the children to enter the classroom, tell them to place their food in the laundry basket.
  • Invite your catechetical leader or a representative from the food pantry in your area to visit and accept the basket from the group.

Hints:
Have a shopping bag for any overflow from the basket.

Gauge the size of laundry basket on the number of children who are in the session.

Make sure the foods are non-perishable.

In the letter home, try to mention specific items the food pantry needs.
