It's Not Fair

Activity Objective:
To help the children experience the disparity in the distribution of wealth in the world and consider how to alleviate injustice
Lesson Outcome:
The children will be able to explain how the Spirit guides the Church in carrying out Jesus' mission.
Materials
•Chocolate candies or snack food
•Plastic baggies
Directions:
  • Distribute the bags of candy or snacks to the children.
  • Give the children time to react.
  • Explain that the reality of the world is that the majority of the people have only a fraction of the world's wealth and resources.
  • Invite the children to share their feelings about this.
  • Ask the children to consider what they want to do with the candy distribution situation.
  • Pursue with the children if they want to leave things the way they are or is there is a way to make things equal.
  • Relate this experience to the concept that we are members of the Church, which is concerned with continuing Jesus' mission of justice.
Learning Styles:
People Smart
Approximate Time:
10 minutes
Hints:
Parcel the candy into three groups. The first group should consist of a few bags with many pieces of candy in each of them. The second group should consist of more bags but with less candy in each of them. The third group should consist of a large number of bags with barely any candy in them.

Be obviously random in passing out the bags.

Be prepared for and encourage complaints—it will make the experience richer.
Sensitivities:
Some of the children may have allergies to certain foods. Be sure to choose a snack that all the children can eat.
