Las Posadas

Activity Objective:

The young people will reenact the Mexican custom of Las Posadas.

Lesson Outcome:

The young people will be able to tell the account of the birth of Jesus.

Materials

Directions:

Have the students reenact the Mexican custom of Las Posadas, which means inn. The custom portrays Joseph's attempt to find a place to stay in Bethlehem.
The students portraying Joseph and Mary knock on a door. The students on the other side refuse them lodging. Joseph and Mary go away.
After a period of silent prayer, have the group offer intercessions, asking God's forgiveness for the lack of hospitality. Sing a verse from a song such as "O Little Town of Bethlehem."
Joseph and Mary return and knock again. Another group of students sends them away. After a period of silence, the group offers intercessions for forgiveness for the lack of concern for the needs of the poor. Sing another verse from the song.
Joseph and Mary knock for a third time. Joseph begs for a place to stay, explaining that Mary is about to have a child. The third group of students welcomes them joyfully. Another period of silence is followed by prayers of praise and thanksgiving for God's gift of Jesus.
Conclude with another verse of the song, followed by a party.
