Lend a Hand

Activity Objective:
To give the children a direct experience in helping others
Lesson Outcome:
The children will learn the benefits and joys of helping others.
Materials
  • The specific materials would be tailored to the project. (See the ideas below.)
Directions:
  • Before the session, ask a teacher of one of the lower grades if your group could come in and help the lower grade do a project.
  • Plan a simple craft project that your class could help the younger class to do.
  • Here are some ideas:

1.In pairs, have the younger children relate a Bible story in their own words and have your class write the words down. The two children can work together to illustrate the story. (Materials: large sheets of blank paper, crayons or markers)

2.Make a picture frame from four popsicle sticks and have the pairs decorate them with both names on it. (Materials: popsicle sticks, glue, markers or crayons)

3.In pairs, have your children teach a simple song or prayer to the younger children and then sing or recite as a group. (Materials: none)

10-15 minutes
Hints:
Be sure that the group sizes are close to the same.
Sensitivities:
If you have a child who is unable to work with another younger child, either arrange the children in groups of four or ask that child to do another task (for example, to be the equipment manager).
