Life in the Early Church

Activity Objective:
The young people will learn about the growth of the early Church by studying the Acts of the Apostles.
Lesson Outcome:
The young people should be able to describe the life of the early Christian community.
Materials
  • Bibles
  • Paper, pencils
Directions:
  • Divide the young people into groups of three or four and assign each group a story from the Acts of the Apostles.
  • Direct each group to read the Scripture and then write a skit based on the story about how the Church grew.
  • Have the groups present their skits.
  • Possible Scripture stories include: Acts 7:5-60 (Stoning of Stephen); Acts 9:36-42 (Peter and Tabitha); Acts 12:1-23 (Peter's Escape); Acts 14:8-18 (Paul and Barnabas Heal a Cripple), or Acts 21:26—22:29 (Paul's Arrest).
Learning Styles:
Body Smart,People Smart
Approximate Time:
30-40 minutes
Hints:
Consider allowing the young people to gather costumes and props to use in their skit. If you choose this option, consider having the young people perform their skits at the next session.
Sensitivities:
Some young people may be reluctant to perform before a group. Allow the young people time to practice their skits to help nervous performers gain confidence.
