Liturgical-Year Puzzle

Activity Objective:
To get a sense of the rhythm of the liturgical year
Lesson Outcome:
The children will be able to define liturgical year.
Materials
  • Heavy paper
  • Circle to trace
  • Markers
  • Scissors
Directions:
  • Arrange the children in pairs.
  • Distribute paper, circles to trace, markers, and scissors.
  • Restate that the liturgical year commemorates the life of Jesus.
  • Invite each child to make a liturgical calendar.
  • Instruct the children to make a liturgical calendar with the following events in each pie piece:

Ordinary time: All Souls Day, All Saints Day [Fall and Summer]
Advent: First Sunday of Advent [Winter] 
Christmas: Christmas, Epiphany [Winter]
Ordinary Time [Winter]
Lent/Holy Week: Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday [Spring]
Easter: Easter, Ascension, Pentecost [Spring/Summer]

  • Explain that when the visual of the liturgical year is complete, each pie piece is to be cut out to make a puzzle for their partners to assemble.
  • Allow time for the children to assemble each other's liturgical calendars.
  • Encourage the children to try to assemble the calendars from memory; allow the children who need help to look at the board.

15 minutes
Hints:
Using compasses or pre-cut circles might better suit the group and time constraints.

Consider making an example pie chart on the board so the children will have something to imitate.
Sensitivities:
•Pair children who are of similar abilities.
