Many People, One Family
Mass Helps Unite
Activity Objective:
To help the children to see that we are all one family in Jesus Christ
Lesson Outcome:
The children will give examples of how the Mass helps us unite as one family.
Materials
Blank index cards or small pieces of drawing paper
Crayons
Scissors
Directions:
Tell the children that this activity will help them remember that the Mass makes us all one family in Jesus Christ.
Give each child two cards or pieces of paper, and have crayons and scissors available to be shared.
Invite the children to make two finger puppets, one of themselves and the other of a family member or a friend who usually attends Mass at another church. Tell them to cut two finger holes near the bottom of the skirt or pants to put their index and middle fingers through for the legs and feet.
While the children are working, draw the outline of a church on the board.
When the children are finished with their puppets, invite them to "walk to church" and be seated facing the church.
Remind the children that they have come from many different families to become one family at Mass. Discuss all the things the Church family does together at Mass by asking questions related to the Liturgy itself and to the other members of God's family—greeting each other, hearing different languages, singing together, receiving the Eucharist together.
Invite the children to tell what is special and makes them feel good when sharing this celebration together.
Conclude by reminding them to thank Jesus often for making them part of his one Church family.
Learning Styles:
Art/Space Smart,Body Smart
Approximate Time:
10 minutes
Hints:
As the children work, observe to see if different ages and races are represented in their puppets. If not, you might want to make your own puppet and a friend puppet of another race.
Sensitivities:
Note with the children the diversity in backgrounds, ages, and races of the congregation.
