Meet a Prophet

Activity Objective:
To help the children see each of the prophets in this session as real people led by God to speak and do his work
Lesson Outcome:
The children will share what they have learned about each of the prophets in this session by presenting a live interview for the rest of the group.
Materials
  • Bibles
  • Books on Catholic saints and heroes
  • Simple props and clothing to depict each prophet (optional)
Directions:
  • Divide the children into five groups and give each group the name of one of the prophets from this session—Ignatius of Loyola, Jeremiah, Amos, Isaiah, and Dorothy Day.
  • Using the information found in the session and from any other resources available (Bible, books about saints, and so on), ask each group to prepare a live interview using the following or similar questions:

Could you tell us something about your life before you felt called into your ministry as a prophet?
When and how did you experience God's call to be his spokesperson?
What do you find hardest about being a prophet?
How would you summarize what God's message is for his people?

  • Once each group has gathered enough information about their prophet, ask them to choose from their group who will be the reporter and who will be the prophet. Other members of the group could be included in the “interview” as cameramen, the crowd, or other important people in the lives of the prophets.

Learning Styles:
Body Smart,People Smart
Approximate Time:
15 minutes
Hints:
Give some assistance as needed in acquiring the background information for each group. The following Scripture passages might help the groups who have the Biblical prophets:

Isaiah 1:1-4,14-20
Isaiah 2:1-5
Isaiah 6:1-8

Jeremiah 1:1-19
Jeremiah 4:5-8
Jeremiah 7:1-7

Amos 1:1-2
Amos 8:1-7,11-12
Amos 9: 9-11
Sensitivities:
If there are children in your group with special needs (physical, visual, hearing, language, or behavioral disabilities), adapt the activity accordingly.
