At a time when the history of European involvement with indigenous peoples has come under increased scrutiny, Not Counting the Cost presents a balanced and objective study of the full scope of Jesuit involvement in colonial Mexico from 1566 through the Jesuit Expulsion in 1768. Against the backdrop of the dramatic stories of Jesuit evangelists, missionaries, educators, and martyrs in colonial Mexico, John Martinez, SJ, explores the complex and controversial issues of exploration and cross-cultural relations.
John J. Martinez is a graduate of Fordham University and has lived a thoughtful life as a teacher, researcher, pastor, and writer. He dedicated ten years of his life to working on Not Counting the Cost. Currently, he is the pastor of a rural parish near Petersburg, Virginia. He has been a member of the Society of Jesus for more than fifty years.
