Parents, May I?

Activity Objective:
To help the children play a game showing ways they obey their parents
Lesson Outcome:
The children will explain that our parents have rules for us because they love us.
Directions:
  • Ask how many children know the game Mother May I?
  • Explain that they are going to play a game that is similar, but instead of asking if they may take a certain number of steps forward, the children should say how they have obeyed their parents and then ask to take steps forward. For example, a child might say, "I put on my pajamas and brushed my teeth at bedtime. May I take three giant steps forward?" Then you, acting in the role of parent, may say yes or no. You might say, "I had to ask you two times first, so you may take only one step forward."
  • Play until one child reaches you and is the winner.

10-15 minutes
Hints:
Depending on the size of your group, you may want to ask for parent volunteers or older children to be the leaders for each group.
Sensitivities:
If there are children in your group with special needs (physical, visual, hearing, language, or behavioral disabilities), adapt the activity accordingly.
