Parish Reader (Lector) Guest Speaker

Activity Objective:
To let the children meet a parish lector and experience the ministry of the lector
Lesson Outcome:
The children will be familiar with the ministry of the lector.
Materials
  • List of parish lectors
  • Permission from your catechetical leader to invite a parish lector to visit your group
  • Lectionary
Directions:
  • As a group, create an invitation asking a parish lector to visit during a session.
  • Prepare a list of questions from the children for the lector. Send these with the invitation.
  • Check with the catechetical leader to see if you can have the parish Lectionary in your room on the day of the lector's visit.
  • Invite the guest lector to read the Sunday readings to the group from the Lectionary.
  • Have the visitor talk to the group about why he or she became a lector. Be sure that he or she tells how he or she prepares to proclaim the Word of the Lord at Mass and what the best thing is about being a lector.
Learning Styles:
People Smart
Approximate Time:
20 minutes
Hints:
Prepare the lector by providing the age level of the group, the reading request, and the list of possible questions.

If possible, meet with the lector in church so the children see the ambo and hear the reading from the ambo.
Sensitivities:
Impress on the children that both men and women, young and old, can be lectors.
