Persons of Courage

Activity Objective:
The young people will reflect on how members of their family show courage in the face of adversity.
Lesson Outcome:
The young people should be able to identify how the Holy Spirit strengthens us to be Christ's witnesses.
Materials
  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Markers, crayons
Directions:
  • Review the role of a prophet with the young people.
  • Lead them in a discussion that compares biblical prophets with contemporary prophets. Whom do they consider to be prophets today? Why? How do these figures show courage and speak the truth?
  • Suggest that the young people look to their own families and reflect on ways that members of their families show courage in the face of adversity.
  • Have the young people create an award for someone in their family whom they consider to be an example of courage.
  • Invite volunteers to share their awards.
  • Have the young people take home their awards and present them to the honorees with a word of thanks.

Approximate Time:

Hints:
Prepare in advance a list of people who might be considered today's prophets. If the young people get stuck, suggest names from the list.
