Prayer Before-and-After-Meals Banner

Activity Objective:
To create a banner to help families remember to pray the Prayer Before Meals and the Prayer After Meals
Lesson Outcome:
The children will pray the Prayer Before Meals and the Prayer After Meals.
Materials
  • Light-colored 9" x 12" construction paper (one per child)
  • 4" x 6" copies of the Prayer Before Meals and the Prayer After Meals (one copy per child)
  • 12" pieces of yarn (one per child)
  • Hole puncher
  • Crayons and markers
Directions:
  • Tell the children that sometimes it is difficult to remember to say the Prayer Before Meals and the Prayer After Meals.
  • Say: In order to help our families remember, we are going to create prayer banners that have one prayer on one side and the other prayer on the other side.
  • After the children create their banners, they can take them home and have their families display them near the kitchen table so that they remember to practice the prayers.
  • Distribute the materials. Tell each child to glue one of the prayers on one side of the paper and the other prayer on the opposite side.
  • Have them use the markers and crayons to decorate around the prayers, drawing their family members eating or special foods they like to eat.
  • While they are decorating the borders, punch two holes in the top of each banner and lace and tie the yarn into a knot for each banner.

Prayer Before Meals:

Bless us, O Lord, and these your gifts
which we are about to receive from your goodness.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Prayer After Meals:

We give you thanks
for all your gifts,
almighty God,
living and reigning
now and for ever.
Amen.

Approximate Time:
10-15 minutes
Hints:
Provide the children with stickers if you don't have time to decorate the banners.
Sensitivities:
If there are children in your group with special needs (physical, visual, hearing, language, or behavioral disabilities), adapt the activity accordingly.
