Prayer Book

Activity Objective:
To create a journal as a place to write down or draw prayers to God
Lesson Outcome:
The children will identify practical ways to explore prayer and prayer opportunities.
Materials
  • Prayer books (created by cutting five sheets of copy paper in half [8 1/2" x 5 1/2"], topping them with a piece of construction paper of the same size and using a brass fastener to hold it all together)
  • Markers and crayons
Directions:
  • Distribute the prayer books, one per child.
  • Tell the children that one way to pray is by keeping a book that records their conversations with God.
  • Tell them that sometimes they may want to write down in words their feelings and thoughts that they want to share with God. Other times they may want to show their feelings and thoughts in pictures.
  • Tell the children to use the markers and crayons to decorate the front covers of their prayer books and to add their names.
  • Tell them that they can share their prayers with others if they like or they can keep their prayers secret.
  • Take a few minutes for the children to write or draw their first entry on the first white page.
  • Continue this process each session until the prayer book is complete.

Hints:
You should decide if you want to collect the prayer books and pass them out each week or whether you would like the children to take the books home and keep them to use there. If they take them home, tell the children that they may add additional pages to their books by opening up the brass fastener and putting in more pages.
Sensitivities:
If there are children in your group with special needs (physical, visual, hearing, language, or behavioral disabilities), adapt the activity accordingly.
