Recycling

Activity Objective:
To create new uses for waste that would otherwise be thrown out
Lesson Outcome:
The children will learn the importance of conserving and being responsible members of their communities.
Materials
  • Various objects that would normally be thrown out (milk jugs, boxes, cans, fruit crates, cardboard rolls, paper, or others)
  • Various art supplies, such as construction paper, markers, glue, popsicle sticks, and so on
Directions:
  • Explain to the children that God has asked them to be kind to others through the Ten Commandments.
  • Explain that when we pollute, we are wasting the resources God gave us, and we have a responsibility to use these resources wisely.
  • Arrange the children in groups or four or five. Explain that you are going to ask each group to come up and select two to three items among those present. They will then go back to their groups and create a product people could use from those items. (Create a funnel by cutting off the bottom half of a plastic milk jug and gluing a cardboard roll to the narrow end of the jug.)
  • Once they have created the products, the groups will put on a small skit advertising their product.
  • Explain to the children that often we don't take the necessary time to see how we can use something again.
  • Emphasize the importance of caring for our world and the resources God gave us.
Learning Styles:
Art/Space Smart,Body Smart
Approximate Time:
10-15 minutes
Hints:
Be sure all the items are washed and nothing is sharp or unsafe.

Encourage the children to be creative with their ideas.
