Something from Nothing

Activity Objective:
To encourage the children to act out the story of Creation
Lesson Outcome:
The children should be able to tell the story of how God created the world with beauty and order.
Materials
  • Yarn or string
  • Bible
Directions:
  • Divide the children into seven groups of three, and assign each group one of the seven days of Creation.
  • Arrange the room in such a way that there is a large open space in the center.
  • Read aloud the Creation story in Genesis 1:1-2:4 and invite each group to move into the center of the circle as their day is being read.
  • The group for the first day forms a tight circle by holding hands in the center of the open space.
  • Each succeeding group forms a circle using yarn or string to make their circle large enough to encircle the previous group(s).
  • At the end of each day, prompt the children to say, "God saw how good it was."
  • While the children are still standing in the circle, ask them to reflect on what has been created: What was the space like before the circles began forming?
  • Ask the children to sit where they are.
  • Relate the experience of creating the seven circles to God's creation of the earth: What is God's response after each day of Creation? Why do you think Scripture tells us God responds this way? How is God able to create? Can you or I create something from nothing?
Learning Styles:
Body Smart
Approximate Time:
5-10 minutes
Hints:
Make sure the children have enough room to spread out so they don't run into each other or run into objects in the room.

If your group is small, modify this activity accordingly.
