Source of Strength

Activity Objective:
The young people will compare their personal experience of the Eucharist with that of the early Christians.
Lesson Outcome:
The young people should be able to express an understanding of the Mass as thanksgiving, sacrifice, and memorial.
Materials
  • Paper, pencils
  • Copies of reflection questions
  • Instrumental music CD and CD player
Directions:
  • Review how the Eucharist was the greatest source of strength for early Christians. Explain that the secret meetings to celebrate Mass were criticized by suspicious unbelievers. Although some Christians were killed for going to these meetings, the Christians continued to gather together for the breaking of bread.
  • Distribute the reflection questions and allow the young people time to write their answers.
  • Invite volunteers to share one of their responses.
  • Possible reflection questions:

Would I still receive Jesus in the Eucharist if other people criticized me for it? Why or why not?

When I receive Holy Communion, do I take time to talk over my experiences with Jesus?

When I receive Holy Communion, how am I aware that Jesus gives me the strength to live as a Christian?

Learning Styles:
Self Smart
Approximate Time:
20-25 minutes
Hints:
Instrumental music can help create an atmosphere of reflection while the young people do their reflective writing.
