Mini In-service Session One directs you online for definitions of some Catholic terms. We list those terms here for your convenience.

Ecclesiology: a study of the understanding of the Church including its role in salvation, its origins, its relationship to Christ, its purpose, its organization and disciplines, and its leadership.

Ecumenism: the movement for unity among Christians. Christ gave the Church the gift of unity from the beginning, but over the centuries that unity has been broken. All Christians are called by their common Baptism to pray and to work to maintain, reinforce, and perfect the unity Christ wants for the Church.

Episcopacy: refers to the collective body of bishops in the Church. When a priest is ordained as a bishop, he becomes of “member” of the episcopacy.

Evangelization: the proclamation, or declaring by word and by example, of the good news about the salvation we have received in Jesus Christ. Evangelization is a sharing of our faith with others, both those who do not know Jesus and those who are called to follow Jesus more closely.

Magisterium: the living, teaching office of the Church. This office, through the bishops and with the pope, provides an authentic interpretation of the Word of God. It ensures faithfulness to the teaching of the Apostles in matters of faith and morals.

Sanctification: the act or process of making something or someone holy. Transubstantiation: the unique change of the bread and wine in the Eucharist into the body and blood of the risen Jesus Christ, while retaining its physical appearance as bread and wine.
