The Great Commandment Banner

Activity Objective:

To have the children memorize the Great Commandment

Lesson Outcome:

The children will create a banner to help them memorize the Great Commandment.

Materials

Butcher Paper, nine feet long
Markers, Crayons

Directions:

Study the Great Commandment: Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind. Love your neighbor as yourself. This is the greatest commandment.
Read to the children the entire passage from Matthew's Gospel (Matthew 22:37-38).
Ask the children to design on the blackboard the way they want to write on the banner Love your neighbor as yourself.
Each child can be responsible for drawing and coloring one or more letters.
Place the finished banner on the wall for the next few weeks.
Discuss with your catechetical leader the possibilities of displaying the banner in the church's gathering space.
As a Follow-up, ask the children, What is the Great Commandment?

15 minutes

Hints:

The letters should be thick and done in readable colors. Yellow letters can be hard to read unless outlined with a darker color.

Sensitivities:

Some children might need to be encouraged if they feel they don't print as well as others in the group. Make sure that everyone is part of this project.
