The North American Martyrs

In Auriesville, New York, is a hilltop shrine dedicated to the three North American martyrs who were martyred in New York: Saint Isaac Jogues, Saint Rene Goupil, and Saint John de la Lande. They remain America's first canonized saints and its only martyrs.

The Shrine to North American Martyrs in Midland, Canada, is located at the Mission of Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, where the Canadian martyrs had their mission.

The eight North American Martyrs, who were canonized by Pope Pius XI on June 29, 1930, came to North America from France as missionaries. They are listed among the saints of the Society of Jesus, or Jesuits.

  • Saint Anthony Daniel, SJ
  • Saint John de Brébeuf, SJ
