They're Walking With Jesus

Activity Objective:
To identify people who are unselfishly taking the next step and following Jesus
Lesson Outcome:
The children will reflect on others' responses in taking the next step and be ready for the Holy Spirit to help them in following Jesus.
Materials
  • Old magazines and newspapers the children can cut up
  • Butcher paper
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Glue
Directions:
  • Tell the children that this activity will help them see examples of people who have taken the next step to care for others.
  • Divide the children into small groups. Invite each group to browse through a few magazines and newspapers to find pictures of individuals or groups helping others.
  • Have them cut out the pictures, discuss them, and make a large-group collage on a bulletin board or butcher paper.
  • Instruct the children to trace their feet on construction paper, write their names on the footsteps, and cut them out. These footsteps can be part of the collage, making a trail through the pictures to show that the children are following Jesus.
  • Conclude by reminding the children that these people could have been spending their time doing something pleasant for themselves, but they chose to help others. Ask how the people in the pictures seem to feel (happy, peaceful). Suggest that the Holy Spirit's help can bring them peace with others and within themselves.

Hints:
Walk around as the groups are working, encouraging the children to tell how the people pictured are putting others before themselves.

Try to have magazines that have many people pictures.
Sensitivities:
Encourage diversity in race, age, and activities in the pictures chosen.
