"We Three Kings" Sing Along

Activity Objective:
To explore the representations of the Wise Men in music
Lesson Outcome:
The children will be able to identify the ways in which the Wise Men are conveyed in a popular hymn.
Materials
  • Musical recording and copies of the lyrics to the song “We Three Kings”
  • CD player
Directions:
  • Take a moment to ask the children what songs they enjoy singing at Christmas time. Ask them if they know of any songs about the Three Kings and their journey to Jesus, the new King.
  • Provide the children with the lyrics to “We Three Kings.”
  • Invite the children to join you in a seated circle on the floor.
  • Ask the children to read the lyrics silently as you read them aloud.
  • When you think the children are comfortable with the lyrics, play a recording of the song or an instrumental version so that the children can hear its tune.
  • After they have listened to the song once through, invite the children to sing along with the music, playing it a few times through.
  • To close, encourage the children to connect the song with what they know about the feast of Epiphany.

Hints:
Try to have a musical recording of the song to help the children with the song's tune.
