What's the Message?

Activity Objective:

The young people will practice critical thinking skills in relation to popular music and Christian values.

Lesson Outcome:

The young people should be able to explain their responsibility when they listen to the media.

Materials

Directions:

Research in advance two songs that the young people in your group might be familiar with—one song that supports the teachings and values of Christ and one that does not.
Before playing the songs for the young people, ask them to listen carefully for the message of each song.
Then lead the group in a discussion of what they heard.
Invite the group to brainstorm other songs that fit each category. Write them on the board.
Have the young people choose a song from each category and write a paragraph about how the song's message either supports or does not support the values of our faith.
Invite volunteers to share their work.
