What's the Message?

Activity Objective:
The young people will practice critical thinking skills in relation to popular music and Christian values.
Lesson Outcome:
The young people should be able to explain their responsibility when they listen to the media.
Materials
  • CD player
  • Music CDs
  • Chalkboard
Directions:
  • Research in advance two songs that the young people in your group might be familiar with—one song that supports the teachings and values of Christ and one that does not.
  • Before playing the songs for the young people, ask them to listen carefully for the message of each song.
  • Then lead the group in a discussion of what they heard.
  • Invite the group to brainstorm other songs that fit each category. Write them on the board.
  • Have the young people choose a song from each category and write a paragraph about how the song's message either supports or does not support the values of our faith.
  • Invite volunteers to share their work.
