Friendship Circle

Activity Objective

To stress to the group that we are all part of the community of God

Lesson Outcome

The children will gain a visual sense of themselves within a community.

Materials

  • Construction paper, 8 1/2" x 11" inches cut into a large template of a child. Prepare one for each child.
  • Markers or crayons for the class
  • Fasteners for attaching the templates to each other
  • Masking tape for hanging the chain in the room

Directions

  • Explain to the group that each of them is a member of God's chosen community.
  • Explain that they each bring a special talent or quality that they can share with the group as a way of sharing God's love.
  • Pass out a template of a child to each child and enough markers for drawing.
  • Ask the children to draw themselves on the front of the template.
  • While they are drawing, ask the children to think about one quality which they think is their most special quality.
  • When the children are finished drawing, have them write their name and quality on the back of their picture of themselves.
  • Have the children bring their picture to you. Using the brass fasteners, connect each picture to another to create a chain of the children's pictures.
  • Tape the chain in a prominent place in the room (over the prayer table, above a crucifix, over the door or blackboard).
  • Remind the children that God has given each of them a special talent to share with their community as a reflection of God's love.
