Jesus' Journey in the Desert Drawing

Activity Objective

To understand the temptations Jesus encountered during his 40 days of fasting in the desert

Lesson Outcome

The children will be able to explain that Jesus was helped by the Holy Spirit when he was tempted in the desert.

Materials

  • Bibles
  • Markers, crayons, pens
  • Drawing paper

Directions

  • Take a few moments before the activity to have the children share what they know about the Lenten season.
  • After the children have reviewed what they know about Lent, say: The season of Lent is 40 days long because Jesus went into the desert, a quiet place, to fast and pray for 40 days. We are called to make the 40 days of Lent holy by praying and doing special things to honor God.
  • Invite the children to open their Bibles to Mark 1:12-13. Ask them to follow along silently as you read aloud the passage.
  • Next provide the children with paper and coloring materials. Invite them to draw illustrations of Jesus' journey in the desert.
  • Create a list with the children of the scenes that they might want to draw.
  • Invite them to create their illustrations on their own, with a partner, or with a group. If the children work in groups, suggest that each child choose one scene to draw and then piece the scenes together to complete the entire illustration.
  • If possible, display the drawings around the room to serve as reminders of Jesus' commitment to God.
