The young people will learn about the origins of the symbol of water in the Baptism ritual.
The young people should be able to explain the symbolism of water in Baptism.
Guide the young people to learn more about the symbolism of water by having them look up the following Scripture references.
Divide the young people into groups of three or four. Have them look up each citation and write a short explanation of how each shows that water is a sign of life.
Genesis 1:9-11 (God created water to bring life to humans, animals, and plants); Exodus 14:15-31 (Water brought life to the fleeing Israelites); Exodus 17:1-7 (Water refreshed the thirsty Israelites in the desert); 2 Kings 5:1-14 (Water cleansed Naaman of his leprosy); Mark 1:1-6 (John the Baptist baptized many people in the Jordan); John 4:5-42 (The Samaritan woman was promised living water).
Invite a volunteer from each group to share their responses.
