Faith Gives Us Vision

A Reflection by Paula Huston

Matthew 20:30

Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “[Lord], Son of David, have pity on us!”

Despite their very real physical disability, the two blind men in this little story seem to possess remarkable spiritual clarity. Sadly, they are unusual in this regard, for the Bible is filled with tales of spiritual blindness, even among the faithful. What is it that obstructs our vision in this way? According to Jesus, it is our unwillingness to see the log in our own eye because we are too busy focusing on the speck in the eyes of others. Clear sight depends on our giving up a favorite pastime: comparing ourselves to others and finding them wanting.
