Activity Objective

To encourage an awareness of Catholic practices

Lesson Outcome

The children will identify that a shrine is a sacred site.

Materials

  • Poster paper
  • Markers, colored pencils, pens

Directions

  • Discuss that a shrine is a sacred place, designated by the Church, where the faithful offer devotion to a saint.
  • Read the following paragraph aloud:

A shrine at Auriesville, in northern New York State, honors the place where the Jesuit priest Isaac Jogues and his companions Rene Goupil and Jean de la Lande were martyered, as well as where Kateri Tekakwitha lived. The Auriesville shrine has statues of Saint Isaac Jogues and Tekakwitha, memorials on the sites of the martyrdoms, Stations of the Cross, and a retreat house.

  • Instruct the children to create a poster advertising the shrine at Auriesville.
  • Invite the children to make their poster eye catching and informative. Ask them to consider the following questions: Whom does the shrine honor? Where is it located? What is there? Why should people come?
  • Encourage the children to share their completed posters with the group.
