All Saints Day and All Souls Days Activity

Activity Objective

To describe the image of the vine and the branches

Lesson Outcome

The children will express an understanding of their connectedness to God.

Materials

  • Shortbread or gingerbread cookies, shaped or unshaped and undecorated (two or three for each child)
  • Cookie decorations
  • Frosting
  • Plastic sandwich bags
  • Ribbons

Directions

  • Say to the children: Let's recall the ways in which we stay connected to God through the Communion of Saints.
  • Ask the children to remember the Communion of Saints and to discuss how the sacraments nourish our faith.
  • Invite the children to share the names of people in their lives who nourish their faith. (family members, teachers, friends, and so on)
  • Tell the children that they will be thanking the people who nourish their faith with special cookies. Give each child a few cookies, decorations, a sandwich bag, and a ribbon.
  • Give the children time to decorate their cookies. When they have finished, have the children put the cookies in the plastic bags.
  • Before tying the bags, ask the children to write special thank-you prayers to place in the bags. Encourage the children to write In Celebration of All Saints and All Souls Day.
  • Have the children seal their bags with ribbons.

The cookies do not need to be large. Try buying smaller cookies so the children can decorate more than one to bring home.
