Domestic Church Activity

Activity Objective

The young people will grow in appreciation for the positive qualities of their family life.

Lesson Outcome

The young people should be able to define domestic church.

Materials

  • Construction paper (1 sheet per young person)
  • Markers or crayons
  • Scissors

Directions

  • Invite the young people to a deeper appreciation of their families by having them construct family shields. Explain that heraldry is the art of making coats of arms and deciding who will bear them. In heraldry, a shield is supposed to reflect the qualities of the person or family it represents.
  • Have each young person draw a shield on construction paper and cut it out.
  • Next, have them write their family name vertically, horizontally, or diagonally on the shield.
  • Invite them to decorate the rest of the shield with photos or symbols of how their family lives out the values of evangelization, prayer, and service.
  • Invite volunteers to share their shield.
  • Have the young people take their shields home and have them display them for their families.
