Interviewing Saint Gregory the Great

Activity Objective

To explore how Saint Gregory the Great impacted the Church as pope (servant of the servants of God)

Lesson Outcome

The children will be able to describe various roles in the Church.

Materials

  • Copies of information given below on which to base interview questions.

Directions

  • Instruct the children to reread the handout carefully.
  • Arrange the children in pairs.
  • Explain that each child is responsible for developing at least five questions based on the information found on the handout.
  • Also indicate that each child must be prepared to take on the role of Saint Gregory the Great and answer the interview questions developed by their partner.
  • Instruct the pairs to determine who will be the interviewer and who will be Saint Gregory.
  • Remind the children that they will be switching roles and have an opportunity to be both the interviewer and Saint Gregory.
  • Allow time for the children to conduct the interviews.
  • If time permits, inquire if there is a pair who would like to present their interview to the other children.

The Different Roles for Church Members

  • There are many ways to answer God's Call to holiness. All baptized people are called to be holy and are part of the priesthood of believers.
  • The pope, bishops, priests, and deacons receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders and form the clergy. Bishops and priests form the priesthood.
  • Some people lead a religious life, living in a commuity and following its practices. They make promises called vows. Through the vows of poverty, chasity, and obedience, they promise to live simply, to bind themselves under the pain of sin to live in a chaste manner, and to obey those in authority.
  • Members of the Church who are not priests or in religious life form the laity. The laity are called to be witnesses to Christ in the world and to foster gospel values in society.
